To answer this question, he launched the renowned “Seven Countries Study,” which compared the dietary habits and health status of populations across the United States, Finland, the Netherlands, the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Japan, and Italy. Keys chose the small hamlet of Pioppi in the Cilento region as the headquarters for his research, living there for extended periods to study the community’s lifestyle and eating patterns up close.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://paneolio.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/paneolio-lolio.png” title_text=”paneolio-l'olio” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” animation_style=”fade” animation_duration=”1500ms” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text module_class=”fc_row fc_text_box” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ custom_margin=”0px||||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”||||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”off|desktop” custom_padding=”0px||||false|false” animation_style=”slide” animation_direction=”right” animation_intensity_slide=”5%” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The findings were striking, and in many respects revolutionary for the era: the further a diet drifted from the Mediterranean dietary pattern—rich in whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruit, fish, and olive oil as the primary source of fat—the higher the incidence of heart disease and stroke. It marked the first time in medical history that a population’s longevity was so directly linked to its dietary habits.

From this insight arose, in the mid-1970s, the term “Mediterranean Diet”: not merely a list of foods, but an authentic way of life rooted in daily rituals, conviviality, respect for seasonality, and harmony with the rhythms of the land. A heritage of knowledge and traditions so valuable that, on November 16, 2010, UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—initially representing Italy, Spain, Greece, and Morocco, and extended in 2013 to include Cyprus, Croatia, and Portugal.

At the very core of this dietary model, as always, stands extra virgin olive oil. It is the “good” fat that supplants butter and animal fats across Mediterranean cuisine. Indeed, it is largely thanks to research into this food—and its exceptional antioxidant profile—that modern science understands how a wholesome diet can actively safeguard our long-term health.

It is no coincidence that today, regions across the Mediterranean that have longest preserved these traditions still boast some of the highest concentrations of centenarians anywhere in the world. It is a testament that, more than any other, reveals how the food we bring to the table each day—when simple, authentic, and of uncompromising quality—can make all the difference in our lives, and in the lives of generations to come.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The Mediterranean Diet: IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION, PEOPLE LIVE LONGER!In the 1950s, the American scientist Ancel Keys, alongside his wife Margaret, began to question why populations living along the Mediterranean—particularly in Southern Italy—suffered far lower rates of cardiovascular disease than inhabitants of Northern Europe and the United States, despite having considerably fewer economic resources.
